This panel is a hybrid event! Three textile experts Heidi Barr of PA Flax Project, Alvin Ulrich, president of Biolin research, and Marie Demaegdt Textile & Sustainability Manager Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp will take a deep dive into the lifecycle and material potential of processing flax for fiber, oil and building materials. 

The panel is part of a series of public events coinciding with the exhibition Regeneration of Flax: Linseed, Linen, Shive & Oil at the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries.

Join us by the flax field July 13th to learn about the many challenges we’re overcoming to reimagine the flax for linen industry in Pennsylvania.

Due to unforeseen logistics challenges, the arrival of our Grubber (mechanized harvesting equipment necessary for harvesting fiber flax at scale) has been delayed. See first hand why it’s such a crucial piece infrastructure needed as you learn about hand harvest and an overview of retting and post harvest handling. Learn how flax fits into rotations and about PA Flax Project’s cooperative business model.

This event will take place in both Spanish and English with simultaneous interpretation. Spanish-only, English-only, and bilingual speakers are all invited to attend this workshop.

Participate in a hands on workshop processing our flax crop from retted straw into golden spinnable fiber destined to become fine linen. Make and take home a braided flax fiber piece and learn all about flax in Pennsylvania.

This hands on workshop is a great chance to learn about how flax becomes linen from seed to cloth. Meet the founders of Pa Flax Project, ask all the questions, enjoy an autumn afternoon at the farm and share light snacks. Great for all ages.

Come harvest flax with us, connect with our community and enjoy a day on the farm. Flax for linen is pulled to harvest and then laid down on the field to ‘ret’ or ‘stooked’ to dry in the field to be stored. Come for a hands on learning day about this ancient process.

We’ll be serving light snacks and have plenty of cool water and iced tea on hand.

Calling all square yard participants past and present!

Join us for a potluck picnic by the flax field at Kneehigh Farm.

Bring your favorite dish to share along with your own plate and silverware. We’ll provide beverages for all, and a few shade tents. We will have a limited number of tables and chairs, so please bring a blanket to sit on just in case!

This is a time to share photos and stories of growing your square yards, meet one another IRL, learn more about flax for linen, plan, dream and enjoy a brief farm tour.
