The Square Yard Project

The Square Yard Project is an opportunity to share our love of flax and build community.
This inclusive art and education project is open to all!
We are proud to be part of a global movement to revitalize the flax-to-linen industry that includes many square yard & square meter projects.
For us, it all started with a conversation about growing an attainable amount of fiber flax… a square yard or was it a square meter? Four years later it has grown to include 96 participants across 12 states, planting at 3 historical estates, and offering 6 processing workshops annually with our flax friends.
Our friends at Journeys in Design first inspired us to grow square yards with you. Although they claim we inspired them (a testament to the community spirit of this movement). We believe it may have all begun with 1 sqm flax in Austria in 2020 and their friends at Berta’s Flachs two incredible groups.

Become a Flax Friend
Do you have a square yard (36” x 36”) of garden space? Do you have an interest in getting to know fiber flax up close? Are you someone who wants to get involved in our efforts and support our project in a meaningful way? We affectionately refer to our Square Yard Project participants as our flax friends - join the movement today!
Being a Flax Friend includes:
Printed and digital educational materials about how to grow, harvest, and prepare your flax for processing
Invitations to several flax processing workshops, where we will provide hand tools and guide you through turning your retted flax straw into “gold”
New offerings this season, such as natural dying, spinning and weaving keep our events fresh for our flax friends old and new.
Learn and grow for 28 weeks from early Spring into Autumn - from flax seed to spinnable fiber
Become a Flax Friend today and we’ll be in touch about sending your flax seed for planting in early April.
Thank you for your support!
